Drug Court
In one fashion or another, use
and sale of controlled substances affect the quality of life for many residents
of Fremont County. Significant numbers of arrestees for all crimes in
Fremont County, like elsewhere in the country, test positive for drugs or
alcohol, or both. Our "drug court" program is unique because a person who
commits a felony, whether drug-related or not, who is assessed with a substance
abuse problem, may be ordered into the program.
Recognizing the pervasive nature of
the problem, our office and the District Courts have devoted significant energy and
resources to develop "Drug Court", one of the first programs of its kind in
Colorado. Funded by a grant in 1998, its goal was to take most felony drug
cases from the regular felony court process and move them with greater focus,
supervision and speed through the system.
Our Office in cooperation with the DOC have initiated a
similar program, the
Inmate Drug Reduction Program (IDRP) with the DOC, aimed at
addressing drug addictions of inmates.
